Finding gay-friendly places to stay shouldn’t feel like detective work.

And yet — there we were, scrolling through page after page of generic hotel
roundups, scanning TripAdvisor reviews for any signal that a place was actually
welcoming, piecing together outdated forum posts from 2016 to figure out which
neighbourhood was safe to walk through holding hands.

That’s the gap wheretostay.gay was built to fill.

What this site actually is

Honest gay travel content. City guides, hotel reviews, destination guides, and
practical advice — all written from a gay perspective, for gay travellers, without
the corporate polish that makes everything sound the same.

We’re based in Northern Europe and we travel as a couple — mid-range, mostly. Not
hostels, not the kind of places where breakfast costs more than the flight. Boutique
hotels, well-located apartments, spots with actual character. We’ve travelled across
Western Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Americas, and we write from real experience
rather than press trips and sponsored fluff.

I started this because the content I actually wanted to read didn’t really exist.
Guides that answered the real questions — not just “is there a gay bar?” but “can we
actually relax here?”, “will the hotel staff be weird about us sharing a room?”,
“what’s the neighbourhood actually like at night?” Useful, specific, honest.

Who this is for

Gay men, mostly — solo travellers and couples, across the age range. But if you’re
part of the broader LGBTQ+ community and you want travel content written by someone
who actually understands the questions you’re asking, you’re in the right place.

You’re probably here because you’re planning a trip and you want a straight answer
(so to speak). You care about safety without wanting to be talked out of going
somewhere. You want hotel recommendations from someone with actual opinions, not a
listicle written by an algorithm.

That’s what we try to do here.

Hotel reviews — honest, first-hand, specific. If something was overpriced or
underwhelming, we say so.

Destination guides — the bigger picture on countries and regions, including the
safety context that most travel sites gloss over.

Travel tips — packing lists, practical logistics, the stuff that makes trips
actually work.

Pride guides — where to stay and what to do for the world’s best LGBTQ events.
